Ruby — The Gem of Sun
Ruby (Manik) is the gem of the Sun — Surya, the king of planets. In Vedic tradition it is called 'Ratnaraj' (king of gems). Ancient texts mention that the demon Vala's bones became rubies when slain by Indra, infusing the stone with solar radiance.

Boosts confidence, authority, vitality, and leadership. Strengthens the Sun's positive influence in the chart.
Ruby is most beneficial for Aries, Leo, and Scorpio ascendants, for whom the Sun is a natural benefic. Cancer ascendants (Sun rules the 2nd house) also benefit greatly. It is strongly recommended during Sun Mahadasha (6 years) for any lagna to amplify the dasha's positive results.

Quality Guide — What to Look For
Natural, unheated Burmese (Mogok) Ruby of deep pigeon-blood red colour is the finest. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Mozambique rubies are also excellent. Avoid heat-treated, glass-filled, or synthetic stones. The gem must be eye-clean with good transparency.
Substitutes for Ruby
Red Spinel, Red Garnet (Almandine), or Red Tourmaline can substitute Ruby at a fraction of the cost. Red Garnet (Lal Lahunia) is the most widely used substitute in traditional Jyotish practice.
Important Notes
- Always consult a qualified Vedic astrologer before wearing any gemstone.
- The gem must be natural, untreated (or minimally treated), and of good quality for astrological effect.
- Synthetic, lab-grown, or heavily treated stones do not carry the same planetary energy.
- A gemstone should be activated (energised through ritual) before wearing for the first time.
- If you experience negative effects (bad dreams, anxiety, accidents) within the first week, remove the gem and consult your astrologer.
